A Simple Workflow - Preparing the Videos

I have got videos that I want to share. As my vacation counts down I have to be honest, I don't want to sit and fumble about uploading videos. I need to streamline the process.

Here is what I want to do:
  • Show clips of some of the BlogHer sessions, perhaps a five minute or less clip of a point made in the session.
  • One clip that gives a sense of the overall event.
  • One clip that shows walking around New York City. Not to sure about that one because I was so busy actually looking at the architecture and environment I didn't necessarily remember to whip out the camera. Yeah, I like New York. Wouldn't want to live there but rock solid as multi-dimensional tourist location.
I have videos in two different formats. One group of video was shot by my Kodak Z1285. I didn't think it could go the distance but it did really well in a low light situation. The videos record in the .mov format and that saves me a lot of time.

I don't have to convert the video, I can just bring it into a video editing program. Those will get worked on first.

The other video format is the .mod format from my JVC Everio Hard Drive Camcorder. The actual format is .mpeg2. It is a standard definition camcorder but can record in a widescreen mode. For folks sitting around talking it is enough.

My choices are to convert the videos to .avi or take a chance that the newer updated versions of Corel Video Studio or Magix Movie Edit Pro 16 can accept and render the video properly.

Ok, that is the game plan. I have today and bits of the rest of the week.

  1. Hi,

My name is Chris. I work for JVC and would like to try and help.

I don't know the exact camcorder model you have, but I have a few ideas for you.

    1. Please make sure to try the CD-ROM that came with your camcorder. Every JVC comes with editing software, and it may do exactly what you need.

    2. If you have video that does not need editing, uploading to You Tube is very simple, and You Tube works very nicely with the .mod files. This is probably the easiest way to share video that I know of. Simply go to the You Tube website, find the upload function and browse to the video on your computer.

    3. While I am not familiar with Corel or Magix, I can tell you that both Pinnacle Studio and Adobe Premiere Elements work with .mod files with no conversion required.

    I hope this helps.

  2. Thank you Chris for your reply. I have older Everio model GZ-MG130U. At the time that I purchased the camcorder none of the video editing software supported the.mod format. That has changed.

I did use the Power Director software that came with the camera at the time. I found that it was an endurance course for me to edit.

I had to hook up the camcorder, go through the Power Director menu, then select the video I wanted and then brought into the Power Director environment for editing.

Again, this would have been with the older version of the software. My editing options were limited especially if I wanted to mix and match videos. My export option were equally limited.

The YouTube option is ok now that there is an editing feature. I use YouTube, Blip.TV and Vimeo. I need an across the board solution.

I'll mouse around the JVC site to see if there is an updated version of Power Director that can accommodate my current needs.

Believe me, conversion is not my favorite thing to do.

    Thanks,

    Gena
