WeVideo Cloud Video Editing - Possible Option for Tablet Users

One of the things that I might have to compromise on is finding a workable native Android video editing software. If I do buy a tablet, one of the options I could consider is WeVideo, a cloud based video editing service.

Yet there are cautions about the terms of service you should know about before signing up. I have words about that later in the post.

First, this is a commercial for WeVideo demonstrating the application:

You upload the video to the service. Next you can editing solo or with a team and then that video can export your video to Facebook or to a web hosting service like Vimeo or YouTube.

Currently the service is free to use but check out the details:
  • 1GB maximum upload
  • Maximum resolution of 360p
  • 15 export minutes per month
  • Access to their music track database
  • A watermark will be embedded on videos exported via WeVideo
Oh my.

With HD camcorders and recording devices it is not that hard to rack up a gigabyte of video. I don't have a problem with the 360 resolution since most of my videos are being displayed online.

I do see a problem with trying to collaborate with just 1GB maximum upload.  I'm thinking that if you are at a convention and wanted to work with team members to create a video experience then each member of the team would have to have an account. Not clear on how cross sharing would work in that situation.

At some point there will be the ability to purchase different subscription levels of storage and usage.

I should mention that if you decide to use this service you want and need an unlimited data plan or a really strong WiFi connection.

Checking out the Terms of Service

Let me see, need to be at least 13 years of age, warrant that you are the legal creator, only use the resources provided for the production of WeVideo only,

Aw hell no!
You hereby grant to WeVideo a non-exclusive, perpetual, irrevocable, worldwide, royalty-free, transferable license to reproduce, publically perform, publically display, distribute, and use your user content submitted, posted, created, or transmitted on or through, or otherwise associated with your use of, the Site or Services (collectively your "User Content") and any WeVideo videos created using User Content solely in connection with the Site and Services.
Wait, there is more...

You further grant to WeVideo a non-exclusive, perpetual, irrevocable, worldwide, royalty-free, transferable license to reproduce, modify, create derivative works from, distribute, publicly display, publicly perform, make, have made, offer for sale, sell or otherwise use any WeVideo video exported from WeVideo and posted on any other WeVideo site or property, such as to the WeVideo Channel, for example, with the right to sublicense each and every such right.

Nope. Deal breaker. I understand that a service might want to use a member video as a demonstration of what can be done using the service. That is acceptable.

What is not acceptable is that if I use WeVideo I give up my right to profit from my video to them? They can sell my work and I don't get a dime?

Nope. Nada, ain't gonna happen.

Your decision might be different. Many folks are going to upload family or social gathering type videos. You are not expecting to profit on them except in a social sense of sharing the experience with friends and family.

If you are into citizen journalism, journalism, education, or other types of video creation think about this before you sign up.

I still have concerns about the terms of service. But is it an option for tablet users who can't get love or a stable video editing option from their devices.
